National Coming Out Day is an annual awareness day observed on October 11 to support LGBTQ+ people who "come out" -- when an individual decides to publicly share their gender identities or sexual orientation. First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of coming out to family, friends, allies and the community. October 11 coincides with the Second National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights. October is also LGBTQ+ History Month.
